Takeaway: When we invest in eternal treasures, our hearts find lasting security and joy beyond earthly wealth.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:19–21
Opening Prayer (Friday)
God, as this week comes to a close, I ask for endurance to finish strong. Keep my heart steadfast, my mind focused on You, and my spirit at peace in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
In a world that constantly measures worth in terms of wealth, possessions, and status, Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6 is radically countercultural. He redirects our attention from what is temporary to what is eternal, from what fades to what endures forever. The words “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth” strike at the heart of our natural impulse to seek security in what we can see and touch. Yet the reality is that all earthly treasures, no matter how carefully guarded, are vulnerable. They rust, decay, and slip through our fingers with time. The homes we build, the careers we cultivate, the accounts we grow, and even the reputations we cherish are fragile and don’t last forever. Jesus is not condemning wealth itself but exposing the illusion of permanence in earthly wealth.
Stewardship season invites us to reflect deeply on this truth. It is not simply about giving money to the church; it is about reorienting our hearts toward God’s economy. Jesus’ challenge is deeply spiritual: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” The direction of our giving reveals the direction of our heart. What we treasure most captures our deepest affections, and drives our decisions. The act of giving, then, is not merely financial it is formational. It forms us into people whose hearts are anchored not in what fades, but in what endures.
To store our treasures in heaven is to invest in the things that reflect the heart of God: compassion, justice, mercy, generosity, and love. Every time we give to feed the hungry, to comfort the grieving, or to nurture faith in others, we are participating in the building of God’s eternal kingdom. These are the treasures that cannot be stolen or destroyed, because they are secured in the very life of God. The eternal value of our generosity is not measured in numbers but in the lives touched.
During stewardship season, we take stock of our budgets, our calendars, and our commitments. This can feel practical and transactional. But Jesus reminds us that this is holy work, even heart work. Each act of generosity redefines what we value. Each offering becomes a statement of trust. In this way, giving becomes an act of worship, a declaration of love.
Questions
In what ways might God be calling you to “store up treasures in heaven” by investing in compassion, mercy, or justice?
What earthly treasure are you most tempted to hold tightly, and what would it look like to release it to God in faith?
Application
Take time to prayerfully review one area of your life and ask, “Does this reflect my trust in God’s kingdom?” Then take one tangible step to change it to reflect storing your treasure in heaven.
Closing Prayer
Gracious God, You are the giver of every good gift, and all that I have belongs to You. Teach me to treasure what You treasure and seek first Your kingdom. Free me from the illusion of security found in possessions, and anchor my joy in the things that last forever. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
