11/14/25 Walking on the Water

Takeaway: When we keep our eyes on Jesus, bold faith overcomes fear, and find steady ground beneath His grace.

“So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’” — Matthew 14:29-31

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus, calm the storms within me and around me. As I step forward into the unknown, fix my heart and eyes upon You. Teach me to trust Your presence more than my fears, and to believe that You are greater than the storms that are before me. Amen.

Reflection

When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water in the midst of the storm, fear filled their hearts. The waves crashed, and the storm pressed in heavy around them. But then came a voice through the darkness, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Those words carried power, not because the storm stopped, but because they revealed who was standing in the middle of it. Jesus was not distant from their fear; He was walking right through it. Peter, ever bold, responded with a daring request: “Lord, tell me to come to You on the water.” And with one word, Jesus invited him to do the impossible.

Peter stepped out of the boat, not because the sea was calm, but because Jesus was near. That single step was an act of bold faith, a step despite uncertainty. The waters that could have consumed him became the very surface that held him up, sustained by trust in the Savior’s word. But as Peter’s focus shifted from Jesus to the storm, fear crept in again. The same wind and waves that had not changed in size suddenly loomed larger in his eyes. And only when Peter imagined the storm greater did he begin to sink. Yet even then, as he cried out, “Lord, save me!” The rescue was swift, not because Peter’s faith was perfect, but because the object of his faith was.

Bold faith does not mean we will never doubt or falter. It means we keep stepping toward Jesus even when the wind rises and our hearts tremble. Faith is not about ignoring the storm but trusting that Christ’s presence is greater. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we find that the very waters meant to drown us can become the place where miracles unfold. When we look away, fear begins to pull us under, but His hand is always ready to lift us up again. Every storm we face becomes an invitation to learn, not how strong our faith is, but how steadfast His grace remains.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for calling me to walk where faith is required and for never letting me sink beyond Your reach. When the storms of life threaten to overwhelm me, draw my gaze back to You. Help me to hear Your voice above every fear and to take each step in courage. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
