Takeaway: Endurance through hardship is possible when our eyes are fixed on Christ.
“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:13-14
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I come before You in this moment of reflection, quiet my heart and open my mind to Your truth. Teach me what it means to endure when life grows difficult and to keep pressing forward when the path feels long. Amen.
Reflection
The apostle Paul’s words here, in Philippians 3:13–14, ring with determination and hope. “But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.” These are not the words of someone who lived an easy or comfortable life. Paul knew hardship intimately. Yet through it all, his focus remained steady. His endurance was not rooted in human strength, but in his call from God. Paul had discovered the secret to pressing on: fixing his heart on Christ. He saw life’s trials as steps on the road to glory.
Endurance through hardship requires a vision that isn’t anchored in the present. Paul’s words remind us that faith is forward-looking. He refused to dwell on the failures, regrets, or pain of the past because he knew that lingering there would only weigh him down. Instead, he anchored himself to the future that God was preparing for him. A future marked by resurrection hope and eternal life with God. The Christian life, Paul says, is like a race. There are moments of exhaustion, seasons of suffering, and long straightaways where the finish line feels far away. Yet it is precisely in those moments that endurance is formed. Hardship can become holy ground when we realize it is shaping us for eternity.
Paul’s “one thing” emphasizes the power of focused faith. He didn’t try to carry everything. He chose to release what he could not change and to press forward toward what God had promised. In endurance, there is both letting go and taking up. Letting go of the weight that hinders us, and taking up the strength that comes from Christ alone. When the road of life is hard and we feel like giving up, this passage calls us to remember. We are pressing toward the eternal prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Enduring hardship does not mean pretending it is easy. It means holding yourself not faith when everything in us is screaming to quit. It means trusting that even pain has purpose when placed in God’s hands. It means choosing to see our circumstances as an opportunities for deeper spiritual growth. God’s grace is not only the starting point of our race, it is the strength that carries us through. Each step of perseverance shapes our character, and brings us closer to the heart of Christ. As we endure, we learn that victory isn’t found in finishing quickly, but in finishing faithfully.
