Takeaway: Prioritizing your relationship with Jesus.
“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.’” – Luke 10:41-42
Opening Prayer (Tuesday)
Lord, I come before You seeking wisdom and clarity. Help me to discern Your will and make choices that honor You. Open my heart to Your truth as I spend time with You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
Life is full of demands. Responsibilities pile up, and distractions pull us in every direction. We know we should spend time with Christ, but often, He gets placed on the back burner while we attend to seemingly more urgent matters. The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 is a timeless reminder that, even in the busyness of life, our relationship with Jesus must take priority.
Martha was busy with good things—serving Jesus, preparing a meal, and being hospitable. She was doing what any gracious host would do. Yet, in the midst of her busyness, she became frustrated and overwhelmed, even asking Jesus to correct Mary for not helping. Mary had chosen to sit at Jesus’ feet, listening to His words, and Jesus affirmed that this was the better choice.
The contrast between Mary and Martha reveals an important truth: we can become so caught up in serving Jesus that we forget to spend time with Him. Martha’s heart was in the right place—she wanted to serve Jesus—but her service distracted her from the greater priority of simply being with Him. How often do we do the same? We fill our schedules with work, family responsibilities, ministry, and social obligations, but in doing so, we neglect the one thing that is truly necessary—intimacy with Christ.
Jesus’ words challenge us to examine our own lives. Are we too distracted by the demands of life to sit at His feet? Do we treat time with Jesus as an afterthought rather than a necessity? While work, service, and responsibilities are important, they should never take the place of personal time with Christ.
Question
What are some of the “many things” that tend to worry and distract you from spending time with Jesus?
Application
• Start Your Day with Him. Begin each morning with prayer and Scripture, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Let His Word set the tone for your day.
• Eliminate Distractions. Set aside time where you disconnect from technology and the demands of life to focus solely on being with Jesus.
• Practice Sabbath Rest. Dedicate time each week to rest and worship, allowing yourself to be spiritually and physically renewed.
Closing Prayer
Lord, I confess that I have allowed the busyness of life to distract me from my time with You. Help me to reorder my days so that time with You is not an afterthought, but a deep desire of my heart. Draw me closer to You and fill me with Your peace as I abide in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
