Opening Prayer (Friday)
God, as this week comes to a close, I ask for endurance to finish strong. Keep my heart steadfast, my mind focused on You, and my spirit at peace in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
In the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers a reordering of life’s priorities: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This verse calls us to a life shaped not by worldly ambition, but by desiring heavenly things and divine alignment. To seek God’s kingdom first is to live with eternity in view by aligning our hearts, habits, and hopes with what matters most to God. It means placing His will above our own desires and His truth above popular opinion.
Jesus speaks these words in the context of worry and daily needs—what we will eat, drink, and wear. He acknowledges our human concerns, yet He invites us to a higher perspective. The promise isn’t that our needs will be ignored, but that they will be taken care of as we shift our focus to God’s rule and righteousness. When we put God first, everything else falls into its rightful place. Our relationships, careers, finances, and dreams become grounded in something greater than personal success. They become opportunities to reflect God’s glory and embody His purposes in the world.
With that said, seeking God first is not a one-time decision; it’s a daily practice. It’s choosing to begin the day in prayer rather than with a scroll through social media. It’s anchoring our decisions in scripture instead of in fear or self-interest. This kind of life requires intentionality, humility, and an ever deepening relationship with God.
God is not calling us to neglect the realities of life, but to reorder them under His reign. When we seek Him first, we discover that what we need most is not more control or security, but more of Him. His kingdom is not just about heaven one day, but about heaven in our life today. So let us seek Him; not second, not when it’s convenient, but first. And as we do, we’ll find that He truly is enough, and everything else will be added in His perfect time.
