10/10/25 Letting Your Light Shine

Takeaway: Faithful living allows God’s light to shine through us, producing visible fruit that draws others to glorify Him.

“‘You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so thatfn they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.’” — Matthew 5:14-16

Opening Prayer (Friday)

God, as this week comes to a close, I ask for endurance to finish strong. Keep my heart steadfast, my mind focused on You, and my spirit at peace in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

When Jesus declares that His disciples are the light of the world, He is not simply offering encouragement, He is calling them out for action. Light has a purpose. It reveals what is hidden, provides direction in darkness, and brings warmth and safety. In the same way, faithful living allows God’s light to shine through us, producing visible fruit that points others back to Him. This is not a private matter of faith, but a public witness shaped by how we live, speak, and act. Jesus emphasizes that light is not meant to be hidden under a basket but set high on a stand so that it may give light to all in the house. In stewardship terms, this means that the resources and gifts entrusted to us are not meant for hoarding. They are meant to be used in such a way that God’s radiance is made visible to the world.

Faithful stewardship and shining light are inseparable. Every act of generosity, every choice to serve, every moment of integrity becomes a beam of light that breaks into a darkened world. When we give freely of our resources, we testify that our trust lies not in material security but in God’s loving care. This visible trust becomes a witness. Just as fruit on a tree reveals its health, the works of love and generosity flowing from God’s people reveal the source of their life.

The reality is that when we try to keep our light to ourselves, it grows dim, but when we offer it to others, it grows brighter. A candle lit and hidden under a basket suffocates. But placed where others can see, it grows and multiplies its effect. So too, stewardship means placing our light where it can be seen. Stewardship, then, is more about engaging in acts of mercy, advocating for justice, supporting the mission of the church, and living by generosity. In these ways, our lives become like lamps on stands, illuminating the world with the hope and love of God.

There is also a humility woven into Jesus’ command. He says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Stewardship, therefore, is never about drawing attention to ourselves but about directing glory back to God. When others are blessed by our generosity, encouraged by our words, or comforted by our presence, the ultimate aim is not that we be admired but that God is worshiped. To let our light shine is to live in such a way that the spotlight shifts from us to Him.

Questions

In what areas of your life are you tempted to hide your light rather than let it shine?

How does viewing stewardship as “placing your light on a stand” challenge the way you use your gifts and time differently?

Application

Identify one specific area of your life where God is calling you to let your light shine more openly. Whatever it is, do it intentionally, not to draw attention to yourself, but to point others toward God’s goodness. As you live it out, remember that stewardship is not about protecting what you have but about placing it where God’s light can be seen by others.

Closing Prayer

Lord, You have called me to shine in a world that often feels dark by fear and selfishness. Teach me to live as faithful stewards of the gifts You have entrusted to me. Help me to use them not for my own glory but for Yours, that through my generosity others may see Your love and give You praise. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
