Takeaway: Jesus understands our cries of abandonment.
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.” — Psalm 22:1-2
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You with an open heart, seeking Your presence in this sacred time of devotion. Still my minds, quiet my distractions, and help me to be fully present with You. Speak to me through Your Word, and remind us that even in silence, You are near. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflection
These words, first spoken by David in the Psalms, were later cried out by Jesus on the cross (Matthew 27:46). They are words of deep anguish, raw pain, and a sense of abandonment. In His final moments, Jesus experienced the full weight of human suffering, not only physically but spiritually, as He bore the sin of the world. His cry was not one of disbelief but of deep lament—an honest expression of sorrow to the Father.
Many of us have faced moments where we feel forsaken. The silence of God feels unbearable. The weight of suffering presses in, and we wonder if God sees, hears, or even cares. But in Jesus’ cry, we find comfort: He understands. He has walked this road before us. He knows what it is to feel the absence of God’s presence, and yet, His cry points us back to hope.
Psalm 22 does not end in despair. It moves toward trust and redemption. What seemed like abandonment was not the final word. Three days after the cross, resurrection proved that God had not forsaken His Son—and He does not forsake us either. The silence of God is not His absence; it is often the space where faith is deepened and where resurrection is being prepared.
Question
How does knowing that Jesus understands your feelings of abandonment change the way you approach suffering and unanswered prayers?
Application
• Remember that feelings aren’t facts. Feeling abandoned doesn’t mean you actually are. God’s promises remain true, even when He seems silent.
• Hold on to hope. Just as Psalm 22 moves from despair to deliverance, trust that God’s silence is not the end of the story. Resurrection is coming.
Closing Prayer
Lord, in moments when I feel abandoned, remind me that Jesus understands my sorrow. When You seem silent, help me to trust that You are still working. Strengthen my faith in the waiting, and lead me to the hope of resurrection. Amen.
