4/19/25 Recognizing Spiritual Drift

Takeaway: Identifying where your heart has grown distant.

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” — Revelation 2:4-5

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come before You today with a heart that longs to be still. Quiet the distractions around me so that I may hear Your voice. Open my heart to receive Your truth, and let Your Word shape my thoughts and guide my steps. Speak, Lord for I am listening. Teach me, guide me, and draw me deeper into Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

Spiritual drift is often subtle. It doesn’t happen overnight with a loud announcement but rather as a slow, almost imperceptible shift. One day, you wake up and realize that your heart isn’t as tender toward God as it once was. Prayer feels like a chore. Worship feels routine. The passion that once burned brightly has dimmed.

This is exactly what Jesus warned the church in Ephesus about in Revelation 2:4-5. Though they were active in good works, their love for Him had waned. Their hands were busy, but their hearts were distant. Jesus, in His love, calls them—and us—to recognize when our devotion has cooled and to return to our first love.

Jesus’ words are both a warning and an invitation: “Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” Spiritual drift is not the end of the story. Jesus’ call to return is filled with grace. No matter how far we have wandered, He stands ready to welcome us back.

Question

Where is your heart? And what will you do to return to your first love?

Application

• Remember. Reflect on the passion you once had. Think back to when your heart was on fire for God, and recall what fueled that devotion.

• Repent. Acknowledge where your heart has grown distant. Ask God for forgiveness and invite Him to renew your spirit.

• Reconnect. Return to the spiritual habits that once deepened your love: lingering in prayer, meditating on Scripture, and worshiping with passion.

• Reprioritize. Evaluate what has taken God’s place in your life and make intentional changes to put Him first.

Closing Prayer

Lord, I confess that my heart has drifted from You. I have allowed other things to take priority, and my love has grown cold. Forgive me, Father. Restore in me the joy of Your salvation. Rekindle my love for You so that I may serve, worship, and follow You with all my heart. Draw me back to my first love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
