Takeaway: Taking action when God speaks.
Jesus said, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” — Luke 6:46
Opening Prayer (Sunday)
Lord, this is Your day, and I come before You with a heart of worship. Prepare me to hear Your voice, to grow in faith, and to reflect Your love in all I do. Be glorified in my life today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
Obedience is the foundation of genuine faith. In Luke 6:46, Jesus poses a piercing question that echoes through every generation: “Why do you call me Lord, and do not do what I say?” It is a sobering reminder that lip service to God means little without a life that reflects His commands. This verse is not a rebuke; it is an invitation to deeper trust and transformative action. Jesus is not interested in hollow praise or mere appearances of faith. He desires followers whose hearts are so in tune with Him that when He speaks, they respond.
To obey what God says is to align our lives with His will, even when it is inconvenient or costly. The challenge is not whether He is speaking, but whether we are listening and, more importantly, whether we are willing to act upon God’s call to us. Obedience is not about perfection; it is about surrender. It is choosing to trust that God’s instructions, even when they don’t make sense, are rooted in His wisdom and love. When God told Abraham to leave everything familiar, he obeyed. When Jesus told Peter to let down the nets again after a long night of failure, he obeyed. When the Spirit prompted Philip to approach the Ethiopian eunuch’s chariot, he obeyed. Each act of obedience became an opportunity to encounter God’s blessing.
Obedience reveals who we truly believe God is. To hear and not obey is to declare with our lives that we trust our judgment over His. But when we step out in faith, even in uncertainty, we declare with our actions that we believe God’s way is best. It’s in the doing, not just the hearing, that we become like the wise who build their house on rock. However, when we only hear but do not act, we build our house on sand. When storms arise, the house built on rock can endure, whereas the house built on sand usually succumbs to the storms.
So today, let us not be content with merely calling Jesus “Lord.” Let us live like He truly is. When God speaks, take action. Don’t delay. Don’t rationalize. Trust that even if the path is uncertain, the One who leads you is sure. Obeying what God says is not just the mark of a true disciple; it is the gate to a life anchored in Him, full of purpose, peace, and promise.
Question
What makes obedience to God difficult for you—fear, uncertainty, pride, or comfort?
Application
Take time this week to prayerfully identify one specific area where God has been calling you to take action. It might be forgiving someone, stepping into a new opportunity, serving a need, or letting go of something harmful. Write it down. Then take one clear, practical step of obedience, trusting God with the outcome.
Closing Prayer
Lord, You are not only my Savior but my King. Forgive me for the times I have heard Your voice but hesitated to act. Give me the courage to trust You completely, even when obedience feels hard. Help me to live out my faith in actions, not just words. Teach me to walk in step with Your Spirit, and let my obedience be a reflection of my love for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
