Takeaway: Relying on God’s promises.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” — 2 Timothy 1:7

Opening Prayer (Thursday)

Lord, I thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness. No matter what today brings, help me to have a heart of gratitude and trust in Your perfect plan. Speak to me through Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

Fear has a way of slipping into our lives subtlely, often uninvited and unwelcome. Fear has the ability to paralyze us, cloud our judgment, and cause us to shrink back from the purposes God has for us. Yet Paul’s letter to Timothy reminds us of a powerful truth: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power.” Paul wrote these words to Timothy, a young pastor likely facing opposition, and uncertainty. But rather than letting fear dictate his response, Timothy was encouraged to lean into the promises and presence of God.

Fear is not from God. It is not His gift to us. What He gives instead is power to endure, love to sustain, and a sound mind to discern our next steps. God’s promises are not just for the days when everything feels secure; they are especially for the moments when the ground feels unstable. Faith over fear doesn’t mean we won’t feel afraid; it means we don’t let fear define our decisions. Faith is choosing to trust in God’s goodness and sovereignty, even when circumstances are daunting or unclear. It is the daily decision to believe what God says over what fear whispers.

The spirit God gives us is one of power. This power is not from our own strength, but from the strength of the indwelling Spirit of God. It’s a power that is most visible in the resurrection; a power that enables us to overcome, to press on, and to stand firm. God also gives us love, which casts out fear (1 John 4:18), allowing us to move forward with compassion and courage. And finally, He gives us a sound mind, on that doesn’t panic, but remains calm rooted in His truth.

Whatever fear you are facing name it, surrender it, and replace it with the promises of God Paul wrote to Timothy. Remember that the same God who calmed the storm, who led His people through the sea, and who conquered the grave now lives in you. You were not made to be ruled by fear; you were made to walk in faith. Trust in the One who gives generously, sustains faithfully, and never leaves your side. Faith over fear, always.

Question

In what ways can you more intentionally lean into God’s power, love, and sound mind during times of uncertainty?

Application

Take time to identify one area in your life where fear has held you back. Write down a promise from scripture that speaks directly to that fear. Each day, pray over that verse and ask God to replace fear with His power, love, and clarity. Consider sharing this journey with a trusted friend or mentor who can encourage you to keep walking by faith.

Closing Prayer

Gracious God, thank You for not giving me a spirit of fear, but of power. When fear rises up, remind me of who You are and who i am in You. Help me to walk in faith, to trust Your promises, and to lean into Your presence each day. May Your Spirit empower me to stand firm and think clearly. I surrender my fears to You now and receive Your peace in return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
