Takeaway: We are free to walk in the power and purpose of new life.
“So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 6:11
Opening Prayer (Sunday)
Lord, this is Your day, and I come before You with a heart of worship. Prepare me to hear Your voice, to grow in faith, and to reflect Your love in all I do. Be glorified in my life today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
The call to follow Christ is not merely an invitation to believe, it is an invitation to live a new kind of life. In Romans 6:11, Paul makes a powerful declaration: you are dead to sin, but alive to God. This verse doesn’t just describe a change in status, but invites us into a completely transformed way of being. To “count yourself” dead to sin is not to deny the presence of temptation or the possibility of failure. It is to consciously remember the truth that sin no longer defines who we are or has control over us. The death and resurrection of Jesus were not abstract theological events; they were decisive acts that brought real freedom to all who believe. Because Christ died, the power of sin was broken. And because Christ lives, we are raised with Him into a new, Spirit-empowered life.
Walking in new life means embracing a fresh identity. It is to no longer be prisoners to our past or our failures. Too often, we live as though sin still has a hold on us. But the cross has unlocked that prison door. We may stumble, but we are not bound. We may feel the pull of the old ways, but we are no longer obligated to follow. The resurrection of Christ lives in us, enabling us to choose righteousness, to live with hope, and to bear fruit that honors God. New life isn’t about trying harder; it’s about trusting deeper. It’s about allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds, reshape our desires, and reorder our steps.
This new life also has a purpose. We are not simply freed from something. We are free to love boldly, to serve joyfully, to forgive generously, and to pursue holiness with courage. Walking in new life means living every moment with the awareness that we belong to God, and that our lives are meant to reflect His glory. It is a daily choice to turn away from sin and toward the abundant life Christ offers. It is waking up each day and saying, “I am alive to God. His Spirit dwells in me. His grace sustains me. His purpose guides me.”
The beauty of this new life is not in its perfection, but in its direction. We are moving forward, growing, being transformed. So let us walk in the light of who we truly are—children of grace, alive in Christ, and free to live with purpose. The old has gone. The new is here. Let us walk in it.
Question
What does it mean to you personally to be “dead to sin but alive to God”?
Application
Pay attention to moments when you feel tempted to fall into old patterns or mindsets, and instead, pause to pray and ask the Holy Spirit for strength to choose differently.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the cross that broke the power of sin and for the resurrection that raised me to new life. Help me to truly believe and live as one who is alive to You. Renew my mind, reshape my heart, and guide my steps each day. Give me the strength to turn from sin and the courage to walk in the freedom and purpose You have given me. Let my life reflect Your grace and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
