Takeaway: Realizing the God of scripture is the God of now.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8
Opening Prayer (Thursday)
Lord, I thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness. No matter what today brings, help me to have a heart of gratitude and trust in Your perfect plan. Speak to me through Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
It is easy to relegate God’s greatest works to the ancient past; to see the burning bush, the parted sea, the walking on water, the empty tomb as the golden days of God’s activity. The Bible, rich with stories of miracles and divine encounters, can start to feel more like a distant past than a living present. We begin to treat Scripture as a record of what God used to do, instead of a promise of what God still is doing. We admire Jesus’ power in the Gospels, yet wonder silently if that same power is truly present in our everyday lives. This is the illusion of a distant past—the false idea that God is less involved now than He once was. But Hebrews 13:8 shatters that illusion in such simple words: Jesus Christ is the same today as He was yesterday and will be forever. His character does not age, and His compassion does not wane. His promises do not grow cold with time. The God of Abraham, of Ruth, of David, of Mary—is your God, right here and right now.
When we live under the illusion that God’s greatest works are behind us, we unknowingly begin to expect less from Him. Our prayers become cautious, our faith becomes subdued, and our spiritual lives grow stale. We see healing in the Bible and assume it belongs only to those times. We talk about God’s guidance in the wilderness but doubt His truths can speak to our life’s purpose. However, God has not changed. He is not a distant deity who has wound up the world’s clock and we are simply ticking down. He is the ever-present. He is still speaking, still healing, still guiding, and still calling people to follow Him. If we fail to believe this, we do not merely underestimate God, we disconnect ourselves from the very power that can transform our lives today.
Perhaps the Spirit is moving around us constantly, but we’re too distracted by our timelines and to-do lists to notice. God still does the miraculous, though now they may be emotional, relational, or financial. God still speaks through burning bushes, though today they may look like unexpected conversations, or answers to quiet whispers in prayer. He revives hardened hearts, heals long-broken relationships, and awakens dreams that were once buried in fear. The stories of Scripture are not merely history, they are witnesses of what God continues to do in and for His people.
Don’t let the illusion of a distant past rob you of present joy. The God who was is still the God who is. He is near. He is active. He is working all things together even today. Trust Him. Watch for Him. Walk with Him. For Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Let that truth not only inform your theology, but transform your life.
Questions
In what ways have you subconsciously begun to expect less from God?
What might it look like for you to trust that God is just as active in your current season as He was in the lives of biblical characters?
Application
Take intentional time each day to look for signs of God’s activity in your life (big or small). Start a simple “God is here” journal, writing down one moment where you sensed His presence, provision, or guidance. Let these moments reawaken your expectation that God is not just the God of the past, but of the present.
Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve lived as if You are distant or silent. Help me to believe with my heart that You are the same today as You were in the past. Open my eyes to Your presence in my daily life. Stir up my faith to expect great things from You, and awaken me to the wonder of walking through life with a living, active God. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
