7/15/25 Jesus Is Lord, Over Everything

Takeaway: Jesus Christ is the Lord over all creation, holding everything together through His life-giving authority.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” — Colossians 1:15, 17

Opening Prayer (Tuesday)

Lord, I come before You seeking wisdom and clarity. Help me to discern Your will and make choices that honor You. Open my heart to Your truth as I spend time with You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

In Colossians, Paul paints one of the most awe-inspiring portraits of Christ in all of scripture. These verses lift our eyes beyond a merely historical Jesus or a personal Savior and fix them on the image of the invisible God. Jesus is the firstborn over all creation. Paul declares that Jesus is not only central to our faith but central to the universe itself. “By Him all things were created… all things were created through Him and for Him.” Every atom and galaxy, every power and authority, every visible and invisible reality. And, everything finds its origin, purpose, and fulfillment in Christ. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. The universe is not spinning out of control; it is held in the sovereign hands of Jesus, the One who is Lord over everything.

To say that Jesus is Lord is not just a theological phrase; it is a radical declaration that reshapes every aspect of our lives. In a world where we are tempted to compartmentalize our faith, keeping Jesus on Sunday only, Colossians confronts us with a deeper reality. Jesus isn’t the first among many; He is the only one. His lordship touches our relationships, our work, our time, our money, our politics, and even our inner thoughts and motivations. Nothing is off-limits. If Christ is truly Lord, then everything must come under His authority and reflect His glory.

But Jesus’ lordship is not oppressive; it is life-giving. His authority is not a threat but a promise. When He reigns, things hold together. When He leads, we are made whole. His rule is not an imposition but an invitation to lay down our anxious striving and receive His grace. It’s the freedom of not having to hold everything together by our own strength.

And yet, this truth also confronts us. It challenges the subtle idols we still cling to: the need for control, the desire for applause, the security of self-sufficiency. It asks us to surrender not just what’s obviously sinful, but even the things we didn’t even know we treasure. Because Jesus is Lord not just of Sunday mornings, but everyday. There is no “neutral ground.” Every square inch of creation belongs to Him, and so does every square inch of our lives.

Questions

Where in your life are you tempted to compartmentalize Jesus, keeping Him separate from certain areas (e.g., work, finances, difficult relationships)?

What "subtle idols"—like the need for control, applause, or self-sufficiency—might you still be clinging to that prevent Jesus from being Lord over everything?

Application

Choose one area of your life where you feel you are still holding onto control or where you haven't fully surrendered to Christ, and intentionally invite Him to reign supreme there through prayer and concrete action.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise You for the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Help me to truly live as if He is Lord of all, surrendering every part of my life to His goodness, trusting in His promises to be life-sustaining, and life-giving. Give me the courage to follow Jesus not just on Sunday but everyday. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
